Day 2 in Moab, UT arrived with the alarm going off at 5:50 a.m., we were up and out the door by 6:30 a.m. Our destination was Arches National Park, just about 5 miles down the road from the Sleep Inn we are staying at. The sun was just finishing rising and there was hardly another soul in the park. Nature – just the way we like it! To get to the arches you have to first go up a very steep incline with a lot of switchbacks (for those of you in the Midwest unaware of what these are…. You wind this way and then you wind that way…over and over again) It wasn’t so bad, dare I say that I’m getting used to my new western terrain.??? We saw many great red rock formations: arches, fins, spires, etc. In total we took 67 pictures so we have placed some of them here but to really check out the whole day. Our first stop was a great viewpoint of “The Organ”
pictured here. It was next to one of my favorite formations called “Three Gossips” which looked exactly like three ladies heads huddled together talking. From there we made our way to “Balanced Rock” and “Delicate Arch” (which is the unofficial state symbol of Utah)
We meandered on to where our hiking trail lay in Devils Garden. This is the part of the park with the most visible arches. Jeff and I decided to get extremely adventurous and hike all the way around this area. In what is appropriately titled a “primitive trail, we started at about 8am and completed our 8 mile trek at about 12:15 p.m. Along the way we met a couple from London, they were geologists on holiday and planned to spend 6 days in Moab, UT alone. They took this great picture of Jeff and I at “Landscape Arch”, one of the longest and oldest arches in the world.
We went off the beaten path to get to “Double O Arch” and "Black Angel"

According to the guide this strenuous trail should take an average of 3-5 hours so I think we did alright completing it in 4 hours, although I was worried about us on the “back 9” when there was little shade cover and the afternoon heat was coming on strong!
Don’t worry moms, we wore lots of sunscreen and drank more than 4 liters of water to stay hydrated!
On the primitive trail, the only markers that you are going the right direction are little piles of rock leading you the right way and a few people that you see can always reassure you that you are not lost. For instance, after scrambling down a sharp rock and jumping across a crevice we ran into a young family approaching from the opposite direction: 3 kids, a husband and his wife that must have been at least 5 months pregnant! At that point, I said “if she can do this so can I!”

Back at the visitor center, I even made a friend with one of the birds! Okay so it was fake, but funny and i just had to include it since most of you know my feelings about birds and i keep getting my picture taken with animals
All in all, it was a fantastic day, and can you believe that we did all that before lunch time! It was the highlight of the trip to date! Thanks Dylan for urging us to go, it was just as fantastic as you promised! We are beat from the sun and exercise and plan on chilling out for the rest of the night! Tomorrow morning we head through Nevada and will arrive in Reno for the night (an 11 hour drive)
Have a great Monday at work everyone and we’ll talk to you soon! Jamie

I, for one, am never bored at work! But then I work weekends too so I read your blog everyday just for the sheer entertainment of it!
I called Jamie yesterday, folks, and told her I met a couple that had her and Jeff beat on this, "let's change our lives and have an adventure" gig. I was the house docent at Compass Inn on Saturday and we had a very rainy day all day so 10 people decided to spend the time a my museum. (A very good idea, I might add.) Anyway, the sun came out and the tourists went home. Since George and I had a wedding to attend in the late afternoon/early evening, I send my store volunteer and barn guide home for the last hour and stuck around until I thought I could get away with leaving early as I had no guests. But, sure enough, a couple in a lime green VW bug pulled into the parking lot 1/2 hour before closing and here is where it gets interesting....
The young lady was from Pittsburgh, but the young man was from Iceland. They were both about Jamie and Jeff's age and he was very, very tall. They were both good looking, intelligent people, sound familiar? Anyway, I had to give them the full tour even if it meant staying late cuz gee, he came all the way from Iceland to see my stagecoach inn! Turns out she is leaving her job and life in Pittsburgh to follow him to Iceland!!! But they aren't driving there...
I told them all about Jamiekins and Jeff and even gave them their blog site. Cool beans.
Later, hiking gators. Love the pics, especially the big blue bear.
Love,
Mom Ginnie
rad!!! way to go, hiking all the way out to the dark angel. i'm super impressed with you two. stay hydrated, and keep up the blogging:)
Hi Jamie and Jeff, Not sure if my last message went thru, got the computer working perhaps it was the heat. Pick Dad up at SFO at 9:30. Your pics are great, but in person i cant imagine, how wonderful, look forward to seeing the two of you by the end of the week. Love Mom O
Wow! Looks and sounds like you guys are having a GREAT time! I was so happy to see so many entries to catch up on. I am one of those who needs your blog to get me through the work day! I would have checked them at home this weekend, but a certain puppy of mine chewed through the cord of my laptop, and I used the last of its battery power on Friday. I will not be able to use it until the lovely people at Dell send me the new cord. Ah, the joys of having a puppy... At least she didn't get electrocuted.
My summer is starting to wind down. Mike is done with his internship this Friday and will be coming home (to stay!) this weekend! YAY for that! No more single parenting and doing all the cleaning and cooking myself! The class I'm teaching is done next week, so that will be nice, too.
Well, keep up the the adventures and the blogging!!
MaryAnn :)
Glad to read all the updates! Don't know why, but I wasn't able to get your updates at home over the weekend. But in checking today, here they are - and boy have you two been busy. The pictures are great, and you must have worked off the calories from Whitey's ice cream by now, don't you think?
Glad you're keep up with Project Runway. I also agree that Malan had an accent that no country produces - ha! Probably just made it up himself. What I heard on the radio this morning, was that the Miss Universe thing was this weekend and they were talking about the "bad dress" that Miss USA wore. They mentioned her involvement with Project Runway, so don't know if the dress design was changed. I thought the won that won on the P.R. show was very "beauty pageant like" which isn't my style, but still pretty. Did anyone see how it looked at the pageant? Just curious.
Looking forward to more updates this week as you continue west.
Love from Illinois!
Denise, Marty, and Sydney (who is currently wearing one of my socks because she hurt one of the pads of her paws. She looks pretty goofy!) :o)
I saw the dress from Project Runway on Miss USA. I don't think it looked bad. It wasn't gorgeous, but it wasn't horrible... Not my style, either, but it was fine. I don't think it was changed much from how it looked on P.R...I think the worst dress was worn by Miss Puerto Rico, who won (and also fainted about 30 minutes afer the pageant, during an interview, I heard). It was some sort of chain-type thing... The other 3 finalists had much better dresses in my opinion.
So I'm glad I could update everyone on the Miss Universe pageant!! I had it on while grading papers. Not as exciting as hiking Arches, but what can you do? :) Looking forward to hearing about Reno!
MaryAnn
Wow, great pics. Good thing you broke those plans and spent an extra time there. It sounds like you had a great day.
See you soon.

Thanks for the update on the Miss Universe Pageant, Mary Ann - ha! I myself was watching Trading Spaces on Saturday night. Such an exciting social life I have!
